Brethren,
A strong Lodge is built upon the involvement of its members. Whether you are a newly raised Brother attending your first Stated Communication or a Brother who has been part of the Craft for decades, your presence matters. Each of us brings something unique to the Lodge, and our collective strength comes from working together.
As Worshipful Master, I am grateful for the continued support, dedication, and fellowship each of you has shown throughout the year. Let us continue to look beyond ourselves and ask what we can do for our Lodge, our Brothers, our families, and our community.
May the Great Architect of the Universe continue to bless our Lodge, our Brethren, and our families.

From the West

Greetings from the West, Brethren,
As we enter the month of October, let us reflect on one of the enduring principles of our Craft: Brotherly Love.Extend kindness whenever the opportunity arises.
A Brother may sometimes need nothing more than a friendly word, a helping hand, or the simple assurance that he is not alone.
Let us be mindful of one another and strengthen the bonds that unite us as Brothers.
May our actions this month reflect the spirit of Brotherly Love—not merely in words, but in the way we treat and care for each other.
"Masonic labor is purely a labor of love. He who seeks to draw Masonic wages in gold and silver will be disappointed. The wages of a Mason are earned and paid in their dealings with one another; sympathy begets sympathy, kindness begets kindness, helpfulness begets helpfulness, and these are the wages of a Mason."
Brother Benjamin Franklin

From the South

Brethren,
As we come to October I'd like to thank you all for your dedication and fellowship to the lodge. October is the month of the changing of the seasons, as there maybe something within ourselves that we need to reflect on that needs changing. Remembering that the fellowship and service and time we spend together as Brothers in the lodge may also be with us outside the walls of the lodge too. Remember that a kind word , helping hand and a willingness to help one another is a principle that all Mason's should carry with them always. I look forward to seeing you all at the meetings this month to share good times and help those Brothers who are in need.
Fraternally,
Jesse Mercado
Junior Warden

From the Secretary

Fraternal greetings Brothers, I hope this message finds you well.
I am going to ask our incoming WM to help me audit our membership records. I find that after many years after submitting a petition, phone numbers, emails and addresses have changes. At present we have two or three members who do not have email addresses or maybe desire not to let us know what they are. They do not receive the monthly Trestleboard or any other communications. With the secretaries help the WM can assign Brothers the task of trying to reach out.
We have not changed our by-laws where dues are concerned, they are still at $281 a year but Grand Lodge has increased the amount requested for a yearly Masonic Home Donation to $18.25. Brethren, this is not an unreasonable figure for a Mason to donate once a year to maintain our prestigious Home for aged Brothers and Sisters. We receive five start ratings on our spot inspections and offer a beautiful setting on the bay.
We presently have 10 members who have not remitted their 2026 dues. I know that some will drop as Brothers with a caring heart have paid their 2025 dues for them and never received as much as a thank you while other as we say are “frequent flyers” who always need much encouragement to pay and creating more work for the secretary. Please pay you dues and remain a member in good standing.
It is important to know that if you are dropped for non-payment of dues, you cannot arbitrarily decide to pay your dues at a later date. Your deadline to pay dues is the December 27th. After that date, if you wish to be reinstated you must submit a reinstatement petition, have a background taken for any felonies that may have been committed, submit to a home investigation and be balloted on again. Please avoid this involved process and pay on time.
Our WM is planning a nice evening in honor of our veterans. Please email a photo of yourself in uniform and a brief few lines of your years in service, where you were stationed and divisions or assignments. Email photo and info to the WM at: mastermason171@gmail.com
Just a friendly reminder, we are not on summer attire any longer; kindly wear a jacket and tie. Please do your part in helping represent Masonry in a dignified, respectable manner.
F&S,
R:.W:. Sinatra

Chaplain's Corner

Brethren,
Hiram and Halloween
Halloween is only a few weeks away and our shops and streets are already overflowing with pumpkins, skulls, skeletons and all manner of ghoulish and morbid displays, often inspired by films, TV series and video games. Why should Freemasons be concerned about these sometimes grotesque and tasteless displays? Perhaps because of the symbols of death, particularly skulls, which they are accustomed to seeing in many of their rituals and on many of their symbolic objects, and which will inevitably remind them of the figure of Hiram. Is there a connection between Halloween and Hiram? Is Freemasonry just a perpetual Halloween centered on the figure of Hiram? Does the legend of Hiram, the central myth of Freemasonry, have anything to do with Halloween? That’s what we’re trying to find out here.
At first glance, we can see that certain images of death are shared between the legend of Hiram and the celebration of Halloween, at least in its current form, as the skull and the colour black. The story of Hiram's death would fit in well with the imagery of Halloween, but even more so the story of the discovery and raising of his body : a corpse which, according to the rituals, already stinks, is exhumed, stripped of its shroud and raised by holding it against oneself...Freemasons have become accustomed to the description of this scene, of which they ultimately retain only the symbolic dimension. But if you take the story literally, you'll have to admit that it's quite gruesome, morbid and macabre, in the spirit of today's Halloween.
But these similarities are superficial and, above all, anachronistic. In the eighteenth century, Halloween had not yet taken on its current form, and certainly did not resemble a ghost train. The morbid imagery found in Freemasonry has its roots much further back in Baroque culture's love of Memento Mori, still life paintings with skulls evoking the vanity of all things.
Isn't there some other connection between the Masonic Hiram and Halloween, beyond the simple macabre appeareance ? From an anthropological point of view, the legend of Hiram touches on the central question of death, which has preoccupied mankind since the beginning of time. And it is in myths that all cultures have tried to come to terms with the presence of death and the inevitable anxiety it generates. So is the Masonic legend of Hiram just one of the many avatars of myth that seeks to explain itself through the theme of death? In part, certainly.
But the Hiram myth does not seem to answer the question of death per se. It does not go back to the origins of humanity and is based on a culture that already has a complete myth about death. Freemasonry does not claim to compete with the Christian myth, but it considers the legend of Hiram as an initiatory symbol of a passage to another level of consciousness: in this respect, unlike today's Halloween, the Masonic legend of Hiram is ultimately closer to the original Samain, which also describes, in a way, communication between different levels of reality.
May the GAOTU continue to watch over all those who need His healing powers. May He continue to protect those in the military both here and overseas. May God bless the United States of America!

Historian's Corner

Boca-Delray Lodge No. 171 embodies more than a century of Masonic tradition in south Palm Beach County. Its roots reach back to the early days of Freemasonry in Florida and the development of our local communities. By exploring the history of the lodges that preceded it, we honor the legacy of the Brothers who built the foundation of our fraternity.
Freemasonry in Florida and Early Local Lodges
Freemasonry in Florida began in the early 1800s. The Most Worshipful Grand Lodge of Free & Accepted Masons of the State of Florida was established in 1830 not long after Florida became a U.S. territory and then a state in 1845. Early lodges formed as settlers spread throughout the peninsula promoting fellowship moral development and community service.
Delray Lodge No. 171
In the early 20th century as the population of south Florida increased Freemasonry expanded to meet the needs of new communities. In 1908 the Grand Lodge of Florida chartered Delray Lodge No. 171 in what was then Dade County. The establishment of Delray Lodge marked an important milestone in organized Masonic activity in the area. It provided a place for Brothers to gather uphold ancient Masonic traditions and contribute to the civic and charitable life of the growing community.
Shortly afterward in 1909 the county lines were redrawn and Palm Beach County was created. Over the next decade the town we now call Delray Beach continued to grow and flourish as Freemasonry became a valued part of the social and cultural landscape.
Boca Raton Lodge No. 328
As the town of Boca Raton developed in the early 1900s and expanded significantly in the 1920s and beyond Boca Raton also became a center of Masonic activity. About fifty years after Delray Lodge was chartered the Grand Lodge of Florida chartered Boca Raton Lodge No. 328 to serve the growing community of Boca Raton and south Palm Beach County. This lodge too became a center for fellowship education and community service.
Although exact dates for the charter of Lodge No. 328 are less easily found online it was established approximately in the mid-20th century as Boca Raton’s population increased following World War Two. Local historians and lodge records can provide the precise year if needed.
The Merger and the Birth of Boca-Delray Lodge No. 171
By the late 20th century both lodges had long traditions but membership shifts and the desire to strengthen the fraternity in our area led to a major decision. The leadership and membership of Delray Lodge No. 171 and Boca Raton Lodge No. 328 agreed to unite their histories resources and membership into a single lodge. Nearly half a century after Boca Raton Lodge was chartered the two lodges merged under the historic lodge number 171. This united lodge took the name Boca-Delray Lodge No. 171 with its headquarters in Boca Raton.
In 2026 the lodge celebrated its 118th annual installation of officers, highlighting the longevity and continuity of Masonic tradition that continues unbroken from the original Delray Lodge through today’s Boca-Delray Lodge.
Today’s Lodge and Its Legacy
Today Boca-Delray Lodge No. 171 continues the work begun by Brothers more than a century ago. The lodge remains a center for fellowship education and service in Boca Raton and south Palm Beach County. As members we build on the principles that have stood the test of time: brotherly love relief and truth.
Understanding the dates and milestones that shaped our lodge helps us appreciate the depth of our heritage and the enduring spirit of Freemasonry in our community.

Courses are presented by the District Chairman, and a certificate is issued upon successful completion of all 15
modules.
The Grand Lodge of Florida provides Master Mason Examinations to be open book type exams designed to give any Master Mason the opportunity to increase his knowledge of some of the Ancient Tenets, Rules, and Regulations of Masonry. They contain a mixture of multiple choice, True or False, or essay questions which should be answered on the answer sheet, as provided in the exam downloads.
The Grand Lodge of Florida encourages all members of the Craft to further their knowledge of Lodge operation, especially those concerning the Elected and Appointed
