From the West

Greetings from the West, Brethren,
As summer begins to wind down, August reminds us to remain steadfast in our Masonic journey. While many of us are busy with family, work, and travel, let us continue to make time for our Lodge and the fellowship that strengthens our Brotherhood.
As we continue our work together, let us remember that the true measure of our Craft is found not only in ritual, but in the kindness we show, the integrity we uphold, and the support we offer one another.
I look forward to our time together in Lodge.
"Wishing you every kind of Felicity, particularly that your Power of doing Good may always be equal to your Inclination."Brother Benjamin Franklin, letter to the Loge des Commandeurs du Temple, May 1, 1783
Fraternally,
Derik Brasher
Senior Warden

From the South

Brethren,
My brothers as summer ends and many of us are returning from vacations and family outings this is the perfect time to refocus on the work of the lodge. As we look to strengthen the bonds of brotherhood through our meetings and fellowship we must also extend our support to one another everyday in kindness. I encourage you to attend our meetings, be active in lodge events and to reach out to brothers who we haven't seen in a while. Our shared meals provide an excellent opportunity to enjoy our times as friends with fellowship of a meal together. May we continue to extend a hand to one another, show brotherly love and be truthful to one another. I look forward to seeing everyone in the lodge and share another month of brotherly love and fellowship.
Fraternally,
Jesse Mercado
Junior Warden

From the Secretary

Fraternal greetings Brothers.
For those who attended the recent Table Lodge, it was certainly a memorable Communication. For those who could not attend or have never participated in a Table Lodge, it is a ceremonial feast rooted in 18th-century England tavern gatherings. Featuring a horseshoe-shaped seating arrangement, the ritual of “charging” and “firing” of glasses, and the traditional Ceremony of the Seven Toasts.
Early speculative Freemasonry in London met in public houses or taverns such as the Goose and Gridiron where business, degree work and festive dining was completely intertwined around the same table in a private setting. Masonic lodges in the 21st-century still follow and enjoy this old tradition as Masonry is deeply rooted in tradition. One of the reasons we should not diminish or “water down” our traditions which will be another topic of discussion for a later date.
At our recent Table Lodge, Brother Todd Kulkin, a recently Raised Brother offered a most interesting esoteric presentation and talk on “The Hero’s Journey” which provided a useful lens for understanding the EA Degree and our own Masonic journey.
Third and final dues late notices will be mailed out soon. We presently have several members who have not paid their 2026 dues, nor have they had the courtesy to reply to any communications that were sent out. Brothers, we have all taken the same obligation during our Degrees - to pay dues promptly. An obligation is a promise, a sworn acknowledgement that one will be true to what he as obligated himself to do. Please, Brethren remit dues promptly so that the lodge can attend to its financial responsibilities. Dropping a Brother for Non Payment of Dues is a very sad duty that the lodge must follow.
If a Brother is dropped for NPD because his remittance is not in the lodge’s account by Dec. 27th 2026, he cannot arbitrarily decide to pay dues at a later date. He must submit a reinstatement petition, have a background performed, a home investigation conducted and be balloted on with a ¾ favorable ballot. As an NPD, you cannot petition any other lodge, you must be re-elected as a member in good standing of Boca Delray first, then you can transfer out of Boca Delray to another lodge if you desire. Please avoid this process and remit dues soon. Included in this month’s Trestleboard are a few payment methods.
F&S,
R:.W:. Sinatra

Chaplain's Corner

Brethren,
Where is Solomon’s Temple?
A couple of weeks ago the Jewish community around the world observed one of the saddest days in their history, Tisha B’Av (Ninth of Av). Like Yom Kippur, it’s a 25 hour fast day. It commemorates the destructions of the first and second temples some 500 years apart on the same day.
Solomon’s Temple in history was built around 1000 BCE and destroyed in 587 BCE as the Jews were taken in “Babylonian captivity”. The Jews were “freed” by King Cyrus, and after some halting steps at rebuilding the Temple, they finally built the Second Temple around 520 BCE with aid of King Darius (as described in several Scottish Rite degrees). Around 19 BCE Herod greatly enlarged the tired Second Temple, which stood until 70 CE, when the Romans torn it down while suppressing a Jewish revolt. In the 7th century BCE, the Dome of the Rock was constructed as a mosque on this ideal site of the Second Temple, with the “Wailing Wall” below as a visible and potent remnant of the Second Temple. Solomon’s Temple ruins may also be below the Dome of the Rock, though archeologists have proposed several other sites.
Where is Solomon’s Temple? With all due respect, perhaps the best answer is 4093 NW 4th Ave., Boca Raton. Or perhaps the best answer is in our Masonic hearts, as masonry teaches by sign, symbols, and allegories. “There is a temple in the heart of man where all may worship.” Freemasonry is religious, but is not a religion.
Freemasonry upholds the idea that universal features are shared by the variety of religions, and that by celebrating and upholding these universals, we can bind humankind in a world-wide brotherhood. Some religions claim exclusive divine truth and cannot tolerate freemasonry’s openness to variety in belief and religious practice. We mourn their refusal to join our cause directly, but embrace common goals and dialog. From the particular history of Solomon’s Temple, shared in various forms by a handful of religions, we draw the universal idea of building in our lives a structure fitting the genius and beauty of the rest of God’s creation. Our personal efforts may be humbler than Herod’s. Our group efforts may exceed them.
May the GAOTU continue to watch over all those in need wherever so dispersed and protect all the men and women in the armed forces around the world.

Historian's Corner

Boca-Delray Lodge No. 171 embodies more than a century of Masonic tradition in south Palm Beach County. Its roots reach back to the early days of Freemasonry in Florida and the development of our local communities. By exploring the history of the lodges that preceded it, we honor the legacy of the Brothers who built the foundation of our fraternity.
Freemasonry in Florida and Early Local Lodges
Freemasonry in Florida began in the early 1800s. The Most Worshipful Grand Lodge of Free & Accepted Masons of the State of Florida was established in 1830 not long after Florida became a U.S. territory and then a state in 1845. Early lodges formed as settlers spread throughout the peninsula promoting fellowship moral development and community service.
Delray Lodge No. 171
In the early 20th century as the population of south Florida increased Freemasonry expanded to meet the needs of new communities. In 1908 the Grand Lodge of Florida chartered Delray Lodge No. 171 in what was then Dade County. The establishment of Delray Lodge marked an important milestone in organized Masonic activity in the area. It provided a place for Brothers to gather uphold ancient Masonic traditions and contribute to the civic and charitable life of the growing community.
Shortly afterward in 1909 the county lines were redrawn and Palm Beach County was created. Over the next decade the town we now call Delray Beach continued to grow and flourish as Freemasonry became a valued part of the social and cultural landscape.
Boca Raton Lodge No. 328
As the town of Boca Raton developed in the early 1900s and expanded significantly in the 1920s and beyond Boca Raton also became a center of Masonic activity. About fifty years after Delray Lodge was chartered the Grand Lodge of Florida chartered Boca Raton Lodge No. 328 to serve the growing community of Boca Raton and south Palm Beach County. This lodge too became a center for fellowship education and community service.
Although exact dates for the charter of Lodge No. 328 are less easily found online it was established approximately in the mid-20th century as Boca Raton’s population increased following World War Two. Local historians and lodge records can provide the precise year if needed.
The Merger and the Birth of Boca-Delray Lodge No. 171
By the late 20th century both lodges had long traditions but membership shifts and the desire to strengthen the fraternity in our area led to a major decision. The leadership and membership of Delray Lodge No. 171 and Boca Raton Lodge No. 328 agreed to unite their histories resources and membership into a single lodge. Nearly half a century after Boca Raton Lodge was chartered the two lodges merged under the historic lodge number 171. This united lodge took the name Boca-Delray Lodge No. 171 with its headquarters in Boca Raton.
In 2026 the lodge celebrated its 118th annual installation of officers, highlighting the longevity and continuity of Masonic tradition that continues unbroken from the original Delray Lodge through today’s Boca-Delray Lodge.
Today’s Lodge and Its Legacy
Today Boca-Delray Lodge No. 171 continues the work begun by Brothers more than a century ago. The lodge remains a center for fellowship education and service in Boca Raton and south Palm Beach County. As members we build on the principles that have stood the test of time: brotherly love relief and truth.
Understanding the dates and milestones that shaped our lodge helps us appreciate the depth of our heritage and the enduring spirit of Freemasonry in our community.
Fraternally,
Bro. Sam Goldstein Historian
